The site of his home at Sandaig is one of the most beautiful locations in the area. Several of the surrounding peaks exceed 3000 feet. The area is rich in history. The road was built by General Wade in the early eighteenth century to serve Bernera Barracks, the ruins of which still stand. In earlier times, the area was the site of a pictish settlement and the ruins of the two brochs, Dun Telve and Dun Trodden, are the best preserved examples of these structures on the Scottish mainland.
